Introduction and History of Papaw Ointment

The Papaya fruit is well known for its rich, sweet flavour - but little is known about the Medicinal and Cosmetic benefits.

The exploration began in Australia by Dr. Thomas Pennington Lucas in 1906, when he documented his ideas regarding potential benefits of the Carica Papaya fruit (commonly known as Papaw, Papaya and PawPaw). A testimony to the benefits of Papaw was written in 1910 by the Great Ormond St. Hospital in London.

After years of research, Dr. T. P. Lucas used the process of fermentation to produce a number of remedies, one of which was known as Dr Lucas' Papaw Ointment - today (after more than 100 years) this is known as Lucas Papaw Ointment which is commonly found at Pharmacies throughout New Zealand and Australia.

These Papaw Remedies proved to be so successful that in 1911 Dr. T. P. Lucas purchased a single story 'Queenslander' and started a hospital dedicated to providing treatments based solely on Papaw remedies - and many surprising cases have been documented - at the time where previously incurable diseases were treated successfully by the Papaw remedies.

It was impossible, after the death of Dr. Lucas in 1917 to carry on the overwhelming work that the hospital entailed and it was sold by Susan Lucas in 1921 - but it was possible to make available the benefits the remedies provided to the public.

Today Lucas Papaw Ointment is a natural, yet effective treatment for a number topical applications (shown below) such as -
